What is District Heating?
District heating is a system that supplies heat to multiple buildings from a central source, such as a power plant, waste-to-energy facility, or data centre.
The heat is distributed through a network of insulated pipes, removing the need for individual boilers in homes. This offers a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for heating and hot water, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Why is District Heating Important for Ireland?
Currently, district heating networks have the potential to supply over 50% of Ireland's building heat demand. However, due to a lack of infrastructure, more than 1.8GW of capacity is going unused.
District heating is a flexible and sustainable solution for reducing carbon emissions and will play a key role in supporting Ireland’s transition to a climate-neutral energy supply by 2050.
It will improve comfort, reduce emissions, enhance air quality, and boost energy efficiency by integrating heat and electricity. Additionally, it will strengthen the electrical grid, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and create jobs in the green economy.
